IBEW Local 1288 Union/IBEW-Jonnie Dawson Charitable Foundation pays Ms. Velma Massey’s (88 years of age) $4,251.00 utility bill.

Memphis, Tn. May 29, 2013:  On Wednesday, May 29, 2013, IBEW Local 1288 Union, the Labor Union that represents the bargaining unit employees of MLGW held a press conference at 839 N. Watkins St at 10:30 a.m. The purpose of the press conference was our Charitable Foundation donated monies to Ms. Velma Massey in efforts to assist with her utility bill that had escalated to over $4,000.00. Ms. Massey is an 88 year old woman and a customer of MLGW who is on a fixed income.

IBEW Local 1288 Union/IBEW-Jonnie Dawson Charitable Foundation knows the severity of anyone in need especially the elderly during these hard economic times, so we stepped in to lend a helping hand by paying this utility bill in its entirety before it was cut off in efforts to allow Ms. Velma Massey to get herself back on track.

Last year IBEW Local 1288 Union members went to Ms. Velma Massey’s home and repaired her busted water line that had caused her water bill to increase grossly.

IBEW-Jonnie Dawson Charitable Foundation is set up to allow the membership of IBEW Local 1288 Union the opportunity to give back to the Memphis and Shelby County Community through payroll deduction.

Since its inception in 2010, the IBEW-Jonnie Dawson Charitable Foundation has raised and/or donated nearly $400,000.00 to help the citizens of Memphis, Tennessee. Having started our very own 501 (c)(3) Organization that gives back to the community, the IBEW-Jonnie Dawson Charitable Foundation sets us aside from other labor unions in Memphis and throughout Country. We pride ourselves on GIVING; we believe that the community comes first.

This is just another way of how IBEW Local 1288 Union expresses our sincerity to the community because we truly believe that “HELPING THE COMMUNITY IS EVERYBODY’S RESPONISBILITY”.

Everybody can watch us on several news stations this evening and tonight.

Again, thank you IBEW Members/MLGW Employees!!!!

IBEW 1288 Union Helping The Community

(the union that represent Memphis Light, Gas, and Water employees)

IBEW Local 1288 established a charitable foundation January 2010, and has donated thousands of dollars to charitable organizations in the Memphis Community since May 2010.

It is time that, the IBEW-Jonnie Dawson Charitable Foundation, the IBEW Local 1288 union /Memphis Light, Gas and Water employees to continue its mission of being a “beacon of light” in the community by establishing an additional avenue of help the community.

IBEW Local 1288 union has put together a team that is currently looking at the houses that have become the property of the city of Memphis in lieu of taxes that have not been paid.

Tentatively, one plan is to solicit the help of the Memphis City Council members in getting the City of Memphis to donate houses on the city tax role to the Union and our Charitable Foundation. The Union will be responsible for fixing up these houses and then donating these houses to elderly citizens, handicap and property stricken families/individuals in the city of Memphis; or raffle the houses off or sell them for a small cost to cover out of pocket purchases used to fix the houses up. The process of selecting the families/ individuals the houses will be donated to is still being implemented.

IBEW membership/MLGW employees consist of carpenters, bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, roofers, heating and air conditioning technicians, landscapers, etc, that will donate their services for helping the people in need in the community.

To be included in the process, the family must sign a pledge to:

a) Pay their city taxes on time every year for a period of five years.

b) Attend a class up front to educate them how to keep up their property.

c) Must be a resident of Memphis for the past five years.

d) Must reside/live on the property for first five years.

e) Cannot sell the property until after five years.

Once IBEW and its Team has finalized our plan of operation, we will then schedule meetings with city council members and the city mayor to get their support for this plan.

The goal is to help the people in the Memphis community that will add to the city tax base during these economics times.

IBEW LOCAL 1288 IS ALWAYS THRIVING TO FIND WAYS TO HELP THE Memphis Community.

The Mission Statement for IBEW-Jonnie Dawson Charitable Foundation is: “Helping the Community is Everybody’s Responsibility.”
